North Shore K-8 Groundbreaking

On January 24, students, teachers, administrators and community members participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new North Shore K–8 School.  Duval County Public Schools, Ajax Building Corporation and the architectural firm of Song & Associates have partnered on the $26 million project to construct a 145,000 square-foot school, which will accommodate 1,200 students and replace North Shore, Lola Culver and Norwood elementary schools.

The K–8 school will be built in three phases to allow for it to remain open during construction.  The school will include a new one and two-story building, as well as administration areas, classrooms, a media center, food services, dining area and a multi-purpose gymnasium.  North Shore Elementary School portables and media center have been demolished as part of the first phase, and the second phase of construction will include building the new one and two-story facility around the existing school.  Once completed, students will transfer into the new building.  The final phase will consist of demolishing the old school and building the parking lot and sports fields.

The school is expected to be completed in August 2008.  Located at 5701 Silver Plaza, North Shore K–8 School is one of seven Duval County Public Schools currently under construction and included in the county’s five-year school building plan.
