BEACON Program's Financial Aid Workshops
Duval County Public Schools’ nationally-recognized BEACON (Bringing Economic and Career Opportunities Nearer) Program is in full-swing with plans to provide every Duval County high school senior with information and assistance with the financial aid application process for post-secondary education.

In its 17th year, BEACON has been showcased at conferences and programs throughout the country.  The program utilizes community volunteers, who go through a special training program and visit high school students throughout Duval County, to teach students how to complete federal and state financial forms and simplify the college financial aid admissions process.

Approximately, one-third of the volunteers are from the financial aid and admissions offices of area colleges, universities and technical schools, and the remainder of volunteers includes parents, local business people, college students and retirees.  On Wednesday, January 17, more than 85 volunteers gathered for a half-day training program.  These volunteers are ready to start training the students.  Here is the schedule:

Character Education's January 2007 Newsletter
Character education is responsible for teaching students how to take responsibility for their actions and to treat others with respect; showing students that there are specific payoffs in life for doing those things; modeling that behavior for students every second that they are with us during the day, and expecting them to do the same; and creating an atmosphere at school where students can safely practice those behaviors until such behavior becomes the norm. Freedom Writers Express Yourself: Youth Discussion Guide
Freedom Writers, a Paramount Pictures and MTV Movies film, tells the true story of a young English teacher named Erin Gruwell who teaches at-risk students at Wilson High School in Long Beach, California.  Using books such as Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo, Gruwell decides to lead her class in a life-changing journey against intolerance.  As the students read these books, they begin to see parallels in their own lives and record accounts of their experiences and emotions in personal diaries.  Calling themselves the “Freedom Writers,” the students gain national recognition for their efforts and begin to make positive changes in their own lives.  On the Finding Inspiration in Literature and Movies (F.I.L.M.) web site, there is a free, downloadable discussion guide for teachers to utilize for students from 13 to 18 years of age.  To access this free discussion guide from F.I.L.M., click here.
