Beautify
Ribault Day
More than 100 students and teachers at Ribault High
School planted more than 130 trees and shrubs on its
campus, including a 40-foot tree. JEA and Greenscape
donated the greenery to the school. On behalf of
everyone at DCPS, we would like to offer a great, big
40-foot thank you to JEA and Greenscape for their
donations, and we would like to thank each of the
students and teachers who put some muscle behind their
commitment to improving the environment and improving
their school.
Dr.
Lorraine Monroe Visits Robert E. Lee High School
Resulting from an introduction at last summer’s College
Board Conference, Robert E. Lee Principal Denise Hall
invited Dr. Lorraine Monroe to visit Jacksonville to
talk to Lee’s Advanced Placement students. In January,
Dr. Monroe accepted the invitation and visited Lee High
School to address the students. She also addressed
school faculty from Lee, Sandalwood and Terry Parker.
Dr. Monroe is an internationally-acclaimed educator,
founding principal of the Frederick Douglass Academy in
Central Harlem, founder and director of the Center for
Minority Achievement, and published author of
Nothing’s Impossible: Leadership Lessons from Inside and
Outside the Classroom. Thank you, Ms. Hall, for
creating an exciting opportunity for your students and
colleagues!
James
Weldon Johnson Math Team Competes in Mu Alpha Theta
Twenty-one students from James Weldon Johnson
Middle School’s math team traveled to Gainesville to
compete in the 2007 Mu Alpha Theta regional competition.
These middle school students were the only ones from
Duval County who competed in the Geometry, Algebra I and
Algebra II categories. The Algebra I team—Tatini Gandham,
Rupin Singh, Shreyas Srinivasan and Jeffery Tang—earned
tenth place out of 19 teams. Jan Jaro, Ji Soo Kim, Swati
Sureka and Vignesh Vudatha were on the Algebra II team
and placed fifth out of 36 teams. Vignesh Vudatha ranked
15 out of 105 participants in the Algebra II category.
The Geometry team, made up of Joseph Bolling, Chris
Cruise, Kevin Lu and Rich Schaffer, won a fourth place
trophy, and Joseph Bolling ranked tenth out of 61
participants for his outstanding work in the Geometry
category. Great job to each of you!
Oceanway Spelling Bee Champion
Oceanway Middle School seventh grader, Paul Launh, won
the school’s Inaugural Spelling Bee. Paul is a student
in Omega Allen’s ELA class. Twenty-nine students
competed in the annual spelling bee with the hopes of
progressing to the county-wide spelling bee in February
and then onto the Scripps National Spelling Bee in
Washington, D.C. Duval County School Board Chairwoman
Vicki Drake was a judge for the spelling bee.
Congratulations to Paul for winning his school’s
spelling bee, and good luck on the next bee!
"Tree"mendous
Day at Merrill Road Elementary
The students and faculty at Merrill Road Elementary now
have more oxygen to breathe in on their campus because
of a donation by JEA and Greenscape. Both organizations
donated trees and shrubs to the school, and students and
faculty took the time to spruce up their school’s
campus. Thank you to each of the students and faculty
who participated in the special project. You are shining
examples of concerned and active environmentalists.
