Teachers Pay Performance Plan Resolution

The Duval County School Board voted unanimously in favor of retaining its current pay performance plan for teachers.  By a 7—0 vote, the School Board adopted a resolution to preserve the district’s eligibility to participate in a plan designed to reward Duval County Public Schools’ teachers for exceptional performance in achieving student academic gains.  The resolution references a plan developed collaboratively with the teachers in Duval County, and previously approved by the teachers’ organization, the School Board and the Florida Department of Education.  To view a copy of the entire resolution, click here.

“The Duval County School Board is committed to recognizing teachers through an approved teacher compensation plan that rewards teachers for their work in accelerating student achievement,” said School Board Chairman Vicki Drake.

The resolution specifically relies upon Florida Statute 1012.22, which provides for districts within the State of Florida to adopt compensation plans designed to reward exceptional teacher performance.

Superintendent Joseph Wise supported the School Board’s decision adding, “We believe that a plan of this nature needs to be developed collaboratively, and take into consideration all factors that affect student success.”

The School Board shares in the belief that the plan that has been submitted—previously approved by all affected parties, including the Department of Education—reflects this important consideration, and renders the school district eligible for those funds set aside under current budget proviso language.  “By submitting a plan that was both previously approved and adopted, we believe we are establishing a means to best recognize—and compensate—teachers who are instrumental in accelerating student achievement,” adds Chairman Drake.

Duval Teachers United President Terrie Brady applauded the School Board for its action and added that the current performance pay plan for teachers does not pit teacher against teacher.
