"Letters to Sala" Commemorate
Holocaust Memorial Day at Library
In honor of Holocaust
Memorial Day/Yom HaShoah, the Remembering for the
Future (RFTF) Community Holocaust Initiative will
feature “Letters to Sala” through the end of
April at Jacksonville’s Main Library. The exhibit opens
on Sunday, March 25, and will feature correspondence
that survivor, Sala Garncarz Kirschner, received and
secretly saved during her wartime internment in Nazi
labor camps—where Jewish workers were allowed to send
and receive, but not keep, correspondence.
Original documents are on
loan from The Kirschner Collection and will be shown
publicly for the first time at the exhibit. The opening
day program will feature presentations by Sala’s
daughter, Ann Kirschner, whose memoir of her mother’s
experiences are chronicled in Sala’s Gift;
exhibit curator Jill Vexler; and documentary filmmaker
Murray Nossel.
On Monday, March 26, students
and teachers are invited to experience an interactive
exhibit and attend a multi-media presentation by author
Ann Kirschner, as part of RFTF’s Holocaust Education Day
at the Main Library. If you are interested in
attending this special event, call Carol Brown at
630-1420 to make reservations for the 10 a.m. or 1 p.m.
program. Reservations for the limited seating are
offered on a first come and first served basis. The
exhibit will run through April, and school fieldtrips
are welcome throughout the month.
“The perspectives of the
writers are highly personal, providing a rare glimpse
into friendship, family, and courtship under the grim
circumstances of war,” said Leslie Kirkwood, chairperson
of the Initiative. “We are so fortunate to host this
exhibit that has received wide acclaim while at the New
York Public Library.”
The public is also welcomed to explore Sala
Kirschner’s invaluable letters, timeless historical
tributes to the persistence of life and love amid
extraordinary circumstances as a Nazi-held prisoner.
