Teach For America Reception

Superintendent Joseph Wise will welcome Wendy Kopp, CEO and founder of Teach for America, to Jacksonville on Thursday, May 31 at 4:30 p.m. at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts (2445 San Diego Rd.) where she will present a keynote address. Teach for America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Currently, 4,400 corps members are teaching in over 1,000 schools in 25 regions across the country. On April 23, Teach for America announced its expansion to Jacksonville, with plans to bring exceptional college graduates to the region’s highest-need schools for the 2008/2009 school year.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Choir

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, University of North Florida, and The Jacksonville Sister Cities Association (JSCA) will present the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Choir’s Florida Tour. The tour is part of a cultural exchange program between Jacksonville and sister city, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (formerly Port Elizabeth), Republic of South Africa. All events are free and open to the public.

Community Workshop

Duval County Public Schools will host a community design workshop for New High School "AAA" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 21 at Twin Lakes Middle School (8050 Point Meadows Drive). The agenda will include a presentation of the final design concept for road and site improvements, traffic flow enhancements, and school programs. School Physical Round-Up

The Bridge Adolescent & Pediatric Health Center (1824 Pearl Street) will host two school physical round-up events to prepare students for the 2007/2008 school year by providing school physicals, free shots and free dental services. The first round-up event will be held on Friday, June 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (dental care will end at 2 p.m.) for children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The second round-up event will take place on Friday, July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (dental care will end at 2 p.m.) for children in ninth through twelfth grade. Click here to view the July 20 event flyer. For more information, call 798.4672, option 2.

  • Pre-registration is preferred but not required.
  • Call ahead for the cost of physicals.
  • Parents or legal guardians must be present for all services.
  • TB skin tests, vision and hearing screenings, HPV vaccines, and more will be offered.

If you can not afford to pay, please make an appointment before June 29 for the first event and July 20 for the second event to set up an appointment with a financial evaluator. You may qualify for a free or low cost physical. To set up an appointment with a financial evaluator, call 798.4672, option 1.


Straight Talk Program Evaluation

The Institute for Health, Policy and Evaluation Research performed an independent evaluation of the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation Straight Talk program to see how successful its programs have been. The findings will be presented at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 31 in the Jaguars team meeting room at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. To R.S.V.P., please call 633-KIDS (5437).
