Englewood's New PHOTON Problem-Based Learning Program

Englewood High School will participate in the PHOTON Problem-Based Learning (PBL) program sponsored by the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE). The NEBHE received a three-year grant from the Advanced Technological Education program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund the project. The grant was created to strengthen the optics/photonics curriculum in secondary schools and community colleges. The grant employs PBL by providing technology students with real-world challenges to solve. The challenges and problems will be contributed by industry and research partners.

Dr. Michael Reiner from Florida Community College at Jacksonville will serve as the post-secondary partner for the project, and Bill Pugh, holography teacher at Englewood, will teach the PBL program to students at Englewood. Pugh is excited to implement the new program and believes the PBL program will take his curriculum to a new level. Students will reap the benefits of participating in cutting-edge, high technology lessons, which will better prepare them for the work force.

Photonics is the practical application of light and optical components. It is one of the most pervasive new technologies. Examples of photonic applications include lasers, optics, fiber optics, LASIK, holograms, flat panel LCD displays, and satellite imagery. Photonics is crucial to new technology advances in industries such as manufacturing, medical, environmental, telecommunications, homeland security, and defense technologies.
