National PTA Reflections Winner

Pine Forest Elementary Student Praniti Kudre won a National PTA Reflections Program Award of Excellence in dance choreography. The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students. Congratulations!


Stanton Students Place in International Science and Engineering Fair

Congratulations to Stanton College Preparatory School Students Vincent Dang, Yang Ge, and Bing Han who recently participated in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dang, Ge and Han competed against more than 1,500 students from international locales such as Argentina, China, Denmark, Georgia Republic, India, Russia, South Korea, and Turkey, and domestic locales such as California, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wyoming. 

Dang and Ge placed fourth in the team project category, which consisted of 251 teams. Their project, Optimizing Network Efficiency: On the Ramanujancy of Heisenberg Graphs Over Rings of Degree Six and Higher, was one of more than 100 projects from the state of Florida competing at the International Fair. Thanks to all DCPS students who represented our district so well. We are proud of you!


Gamma Rho Omega Scholarship Winners

Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority’s Gamma Rho Omega chapter awarded scholarships totaling $23,000 to six, deserving DCPS students. Congratulations to each of these outstanding seniors:

  • Jacarie Cuyler, Andrew Jackson High, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship, which will be distributed over 4 years.
  • Tiffany Evelyn, Edward H. White High, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship, which will be distributed over 4 years.
  • Yasmin Bilal, Robert E. Lee High, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
  • April Crews, Terry Parker High, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
  • Imani Jackson, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
  • Monique Scott, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

Gamma Rho Omega scholarship committee members included Gwen Flanders and Lois Prime, Chairpersons Wilhelmina Brown, Jennifer Butler, Felicia Cruse, Johnestine Daigeau, Jimmie Harper, Shirley Harrison, Michele F. Hatcher, Rebecca Hobbs, Joanna Kendricks, Estelle McKissick, Bettie Messer, Doris Putman, Willeta Richie, Pamela Seay, Sophia White, and Valerie Williams.


Peterson Students Compete in SkillsUSA 2007 State Conference 

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives who all work together to ensure America has a skilled work force. SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. Students from Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology participated in the 2007 State Conference, and they performed very well—making us all proud.  A total of 40 Peterson students participated in the state competition, and they took home 26 medals (11 gold, 7 silver, 8 bronze). Six students qualified for the national competition. Congratulations!


Terry Parker’s Newspaper Places Third at Awards

Every year, Terry Parker High School journalism students enter the school’s newspaper, Smoke Signals, into the Florida Times-Union High School Journalism Award competition. This year, Smoke Signals placed third overall; first in advertising designs; and received an honorable mention for an editorial written by Terry Parker student Alexis Gornail. “Overall this paper was among the most provocative—and most fun to read,” said Times-Union Deputy Managing Editor Carole Fader. The students received a check for $150 and a $30 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.


Invention Convention/Family Science Day 2007

Invention Convention/Family Science Day, held on Saturday, May 5 at duPont Middle School, is a competition to reward kindergarten through eighth grade students for their ingenuity, creativity, and critical thinking in the development of an invention. Individual school competitions were conducted earlier in the year to determine the district participants, and each school was permitted to enter one student and one group project per grade level. DCPS/DTU Awards for 2006 United Way Campaign

Each year, Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) and Duval Teachers United (DTU) participate in United Way’s Annual Fundraising Campaign, and awards are given to the top participants.

And, the winners are…

Cluster Champion Awards

These awards are based on the highest per capita giving and are awarded to the three highest achieving schools in each cluster.

    • 53 percent increase in employee participation

Super’s School Campaign Champion

This award is given to the best over all campaign, in terms of dollars, involvement and creativity.  Parkwood Heights Principal Susan Golden personally led the campaign by using the DCPS/DTU video and educating the faculty and staff. Golden said, “Every day we see, feel, and touch what the United Way and the Full Service Schools do for us.”

Each of the winning schools’ representatives will be recognized at the July 03, 2007 Duval County School Board meeting where more details, campaign totals and prizes also will be announced. Superintendent Joseph Wise, on behalf of DTU President Terri Brady, the United Way and everyone at DCPS, would like to express heartfelt and deep appreciation for everyone’s support. This was DCPS’ most successful United Way fundraising campaign to date. Thank you for making it happen!


Sabal Palm Elementary Student Designs Winning Bookmark

Congratulations to Sabal Palm Elementary Student Jessica Anderson who designed the winning bookmark in Jacksonville Public Library’s 2007 Bookmark Design Contest. The Jacksonville Public Library held the contest to help celebrate National Library Week. Jessica won first place in the 4th and 5th grade category. Keep dreaming and creating, Jessica!
