2007 United
Way Kick-Off
Can we hit the
half-million-dollar mark?
The DCPS 2008 United Way
giving campaign is underway! The campaign theme this
year is “Rockin’ the Community” and will conclude on
November 16. Non-school based employees received their
contribution form and information today via the payroll
pouch.
DCPS, the second largest
employer in the area, set the example last year with a
22% increase in giving to United Way. This year,
Superintendent Joseph Wise has challenged DCPS employees
at all levels to boost their gifts by 20% so that our
total contribution to the United Way can hit the
half-million-dollar mark. Last year, our employees
generously gave $422,020 to the United Way. The increase
in giving could easily come from “new” contributors;
gifts of any size will be appreciated. Only 30% of DCPS
employees made a donation to the United Way last year.
Dr. Wise acknowledged that
each person has their own reason to give or not,
however, he pointed out that there is a compelling
reason to support the campaign. “A huge portion of the
good work funded by the United Way directly or
indirectly supports education,” he said, “DCPS employees
get a greater return on their investment (gift) than
other employees.”
This year, United Way has
funded “Success By Six,” which supports early literacy
through quality pre-kindergarten day care, and
“Achievers For Life,” a new early intervention program
at Arlington and Fort Caroline Middle schools that aim
to reduce the dropout rate at Terry Parker High School.
Also, the district’s 8th “Full Service
School” soon will open at Sandalwood.
Campaign rallies will be
hosted at each of our schools and buildings. Employees
at the Prudential Drive building are invited to a rally
next Friday, October 12, at 3:45 p.m. on the patio
outside the building along the river. Refreshments will
be served and rock-and-roll music will be heard. A pair
of Jaguars tickets will be given away in a drawing of
people who have turned in their contribution forms.
