Sandalwood Become Eighth Full Service School

Thanks to local philanthropists, Wayne Weaver and his wife Delores Barr Weaver, Sandalwood High School will become home to the city’s eighth Full Service School on November 1. Earlier this year the Weavers donated $21 million to 38 Northeast Florida non-profit organizations. Of the $21 million donation, over $1.6 million was given to the Untied Way of Northeast Florida Full Service Centers to open the new Sandalwood Center and to expand services at the Andrew Jackson Center located in Springfield. While announcing this unprecedented act of kindness, Mrs. Barr Weaver was quoted as saying, “We came from humble beginnings, and it’s just great to be given the opportunity to help these deserving people.”

Full Service Schools are a neighborhood-governed educational and social service collaboration designed to meet the health and psycho-social needs of students. The goal of the collaboration is to deliver to the classroom, healthy, motivated and well-behaved students thereby allowing teachers to teach rather than having to address non-educational issues.

The United Way partners with several local agencies including Duval County Health Department, Neighborhood Partnership for the Protection of Children, Jacksonville Children's Commission and over 25 community non-profit service providers to bring services to at-risk students.

There are seven other Full Service School Centers located on or near the campuses of Englewood High, Fletcher High, Andrew Jackson High, Annie R. Morgan Elementary, Oak Hill Elementary, Ribault High and Terry Parker High schools. For more information on Full Service School Centers, call the United Way at 390-3200 or visit their web site at http://www.uwnefl.org/Partnerships_FSS.asp.
