Importance of strategic plan to be examined on next “School Matters” TV show
Education funding by the state legislature, a new leadership development program and full scholarships for DCPS students who need them the most, are topics of discussion on “School Matters.” Viewers will also be introduced to the new 2008 districtwide Teacher of the Year. The next edition of Duval County Public Schools’ monthly question-and-answer program premieres Sunday, April 27, at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV, over-the-air Channel 7 and Comcast cable Channel 8.
Executive Director of Budget Services Mike Perrone and School Board Chairwoman Betty Burney join Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals to explain the latest and often grim developments in education funding as the state legislature nears the end of its term in Tallahassee. They detail the expected multi-million-dollar shortfall in funding to DCPS for the 2008-09 fiscal year, and where cuts in programs and services may have to be made.
In the second program segment, Dr. Kelly Coker-Daniels, principal at Landon Middle School, joins Superintendent Pratt-Dannals to discuss a new leadership development program offered by the Schultz Center For Teaching and Leadership. Dr. Coker-Daniels will tell how similar training has helped her become an effective DCPS administrator. The one-year Aspiring Leaders Academy prepares classroom teachers, instructional coaches and counselors for educational leadership certification or promotion.
The third segment will feature former sheriff Nat Glover, now an Ambassador of Higher Education. He and Superintendent Pratt-Dannals explain the recent collaboration that has resulted in the Jacksonville Commitment, a program that will provide full college scholarships to some deserving DCPS students from low-income families.
The final segment introduces Lucretia Miller, the recently named districtwide DCPS Teacher of the Year. Cheryl Grymes, the executive director of the Alliance for World Class Education, will also explain the importance of the EDDY Awards and how the best teachers are selected and honored at the annual formal dinner.
The program is produced monthly by WJCT-TV and the Communications Department of Duval County Public Schools. Veteran interviewer Joyce Morgan Danford is the moderator.
“School Matters” airs the fourth Sunday of every month at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV, over-the-air Channel 7 and Comcast cable Channel 8. After its premiere, “School Matters” is televised each Wednesday at 5 p.m. on Comcast cable Channel 29.
