85 Duval County Teachers Earn National Board Certification
Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) had 85 teachers receive certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) this year. Achieving National Board Certification is the highest symbol of professional teaching excellence. These teachers have successfully met the rigorous requirements for certification and joined district’s other 304 Board Certified teachers, bringing the current total to 389.
To qualify for certification, an applicant must currently hold a bachelor’s degree, have completed three full years of teaching/counseling experience and possess a valid state teaching/counseling license for that period of time. Once the application is accepted by the NBPTS, it may take an applicant up to three years to become certified. This process involves the submission of four portfolios, of which three must be classroom based, and completion of six exercises demonstrating knowledge in their chosen certificate area.
“National Board Certification is the most prestigious credential a teacher can earn. Like board-certified doctors and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer review,” said NBPTS President and CEO Joseph A. Aguerrebere.
This year, with more than 1,600 teachers, Florida ranked number one in the country with the highest number of teachers earning their certification. Throughout the United States, nearly 8,500 teachers qualified for national certification during 2007.
