DCPS Employees Saluted by United Way
For their generosity and support of United Way of Northeast Florida’s charitable programs, Duval County Public Schools employees who financially supported the recent campaign drive were honored with a top award Feb. 7.
Combined employee giving, which exceeded $422,000, earned DCPS a top spot in United Way's 2007 Circle of Honor. United Way's Campaign Chairman Ron Autrey said Circle honorees are companies and organizations that exceed high standards in three criteria: high percentage of employee participation; per capita employee giving; and percentage of increase in total giving. Autrey said DCPS employees earned the top distinction, the Platinum Award.
The presentation was made on the stage of the Florida Theatre when United Way hosted its Community Celebration, a wrap-up of the overall fall campaign.
Bruce Ackerman chaired the DCPS campaign while Susan Golden was Leadership Giving chair. Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and Jim Streit served with Autrey on the 2007 Campaign Cabinet.
DCPS support of the United Way is noteworthy because the public school system is a direct beneficiary of United Way programs. Success By Six funds early scholarships to ensure that children are ready to learn when they enroll in DCPS schools. Achievers For Life is a United Way program that focuses on middle-school students at Arlington and Fort Caroline, helping these young people move on to success in high school and to graduate on time. United Way now operates its newest full-service school at Sandalwood. It is a collaboration of DCPS, community and government services brought together to deliver healthy, motivated and well-behaved students to our classrooms.
