Importance of strategic plan to be examined on next “School Matters” TV show

The strategic plan, expansion of the International Baccalaureate program, benefits of K-8 schools and the value that National Board Certification brings to teachers are topics of discussion on “School Matters.” The next edition of Duval County Public Schools’ monthly question-and-answer program premieres Sunday, March 23, at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV, over-the-air Channel 7 and Comcast Channel 8.

Chief Operating Officer Doug Ayars joins Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals to explain the how’s and why’s of the strategic plan currently being developed by the Duval County School Board, district staff and The Alliance For World Class Education, an independent nonprofit group that supports public education in Jacksonville. The document pulls together the board’s core beliefs and commitments, vision, mission and the Superintendent’s six overarching goals with specific measurable outcomes, “The plan says ‘here’s where we are headed’ and ‘here’s how we are going to get there’,” said Superintendent Pratt-Dannals.

Preston Haskell, founder of The Haskell Companies and leader of The Alliance’s strategic plan task force, joins the panel to explain how he hopes the plan will positively impact individual student achievement.

In the second program segment, Kathy Kassees, principal of Fort Caroline Middle School and Sabrina Session-Jones, principal at R. L. Brown Elementary, join Superintendent Pratt-Dannals to discuss the expansion of the rigorous International Baccalaureate program.

The third segment features Dana Kriznar, principal at Kirby-Smith, North Shore Elementary principal Dr. Deirdra McDowell-Sutton and Superintendent Pratt-Dannals examining the benefits of K-8 schools.
