"Just Read It" Stars of
the Month Tour Stadium
The Mike Peterson Foundation
and Duval
County
Public Schools announced
the November Star of the Month for the Mike Peterson
Foundation’s "Just Read It" Program. The stars were
invited to a meet and greet at
the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The event included
an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium and a
special visit with Jacksonville Jaguar Linebacker Mike
Peterson.
Students were selected based
on their outstanding achievements in reading. These
students worked very hard following directions in the
classroom, as well as continuing to improve their
reading skills.

DCPS Teacher Selected as Catapult
Learning Teacher of the Year Gail
Purdy, a teacher in the Duval County Public Schools
Juvenile Justice Schools, has been selected as the 2008
National Teacher of the Year for Catapult Learning,
Title I.
Catapult Learning (formerly
Sylvan Education Solutions) partners with public schools
and school districts to provide research-based
educational and support services designed to improve the
performance of at-risk students. It is a contracted
service that the district’s Title I Department utilizes
in schools for reading.
“I salute Ms. Purdy's
commitment, professionalism and dedication to teaching
all students,” said Dr. Marvin McQueen, principal of the
district’s Juvenile Justice Schools.
Ms. Purdy will receive the award at the National
Catapult Convention in
Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, taking place this
month.
Southside
Middle School Partners with Community First
Credit Union
Southside
Middle School
and Community First Credit Union (CFCU) formalized an educational partnership on
September 9 during the school’s open house program, with the credit union
pledging to support the school through financial literacy, mentoring and
tutoring.
Keynote speakers included
Shaquandra Woods, a business/community liaison from CFCU
and LaTanya McNeal, principal of
Southside
Middle School.
Other attendees celebrating
the partnership included Duval County School Board
Member Kris Barnes; Lawrence Dennis and Jill Budd, Duval
County Public Schools’ Chief Officer and Executive
Director of Middle Schools for Cluster IV; and other
representatives from CFCU.
Following open house, a
reception for the educational business partners and
guests was held in the media center.
