National School Bus Safety Week
The Department of Education and the Florida Association for Pupil Transportation has designated October 20-24 as National School Bus Safety Week. This observance recognizes Florida’s school bus operators and transportation department personnel for their commitment and dedication to the task of ensuring safe transportation for over one million students to school each day in school buses.
School buses continue to be the safest vehicle on the road to transport students. Nevertheless, the danger zones around school buses continue to be of great concern for bus drivers and other motorists. Motorists must remember to stop when a school bus has its flashing red lights on and its stop arms extended. These are the signals that indicate school children are boarding or departing from the bus, which are the most critical times for the safety of children. School districts will continue to provide training to bus drivers on student pickup and drop-off procedures, as well as training to students on safe behaviors in and around school buses.
Also critical to student safety are local Community Traffic Safety Teams. These teams are made up of representatives from community agencies who work together throughout the year to reduce traffic hazards faced by students and the motoring public.
During National School Bus Safety Week, district personnel throughout the country are encouraged to provide activities that recognize and honor school bus operators and all transportation professionals for their commitment to school bus safety.
