DCPS’ new Portuguese Program, YMCA’s Mentoring and Tutoring Initiative and International Day of Peace activities are all topics on the next episode of REAL School

On the next “REAL School,” a new language is gaining popularity at First Coast High School; John E. Ford K-8 students look up to mentors with help from the YMCA; and students at Arlington Heights Elementary commemorate the International Day of Peace. The season premiere of “REAL School,” Duval County Public Schools monthly news magazine television show debuts, Sunday, October 5, 2008 at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8.

First Coast High School students now have another elective choice within their course of study. The Portuguese program began this school year, and brings a world of knowledge and connections to the students. Providing insight to the curriculum, the students explain what they enjoy most about the course as well as the most challenging aspect of learning a new language. Students also discuss how the program will provide them with opportunities for future employment with the Jacksonville Port Authority. Sueli Wilkerson, the course instructor and a native Brazilian, provides first-hand understanding of the language and does an excellent job of communicating her knowledge with the students.

Students at John E. Ford K-8 magnet school receive extra help throughout the school year thanks to the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast. The Diamond Club was formed a few years ago to mentor and tutor elementary students who are identified as youngsters who could benefit from the outreach program. The small group of boys meet once a week with mentors provided by the YMCA and discusses the importance of responsibility and accountability. Most of the discussions extend outside the classroom with activities and field trips to various venues around the city. Tune in to share in their success.

In the show’s final segment, students at Arlington Heights Elementary participate in the international “Day of Peace,” while also communicating their theme for the year “One World, Many Cultures.” Students gathered in the hallways and made a large circle around the school to symbolize their togetherness. Kindergarten teacher, Maria Tuttobene, organized the event at Arlington Heights with hope that the children would become inspired and see peace as a way of life. Tune in to see the magnificent display of “One World, Many Cultures.”

“REAL School” is produced monthly by WJCT-TV and the Communications Department of Duval County Public Schools. Students David Emmanuel and Hanna Maria Roder host “REAL School” which airs the first Sunday of every month at 10 a.m. Broadcasted first-run on WJCT-TV, Channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8, “REAL School” is also televised each Monday at 9 p.m. on Comcast cable channel 29 after its premiere.
