On this month's episode of "REAL School"
Students at Mt. Herman celebrate diversity, middle school students learn the game and compete in the Bob Hayes Track Meet, and Pine Forest Elementary students get healthy! The newest episode of “REAL School,” Duval County Public Schools monthly news magazine television show, debuts this Sunday, April 5 at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8.
Students at Mt. Herman Exceptional Student Center enjoyed a trip to the islands, without leaving the school grounds! Principal Mark Cashen and his faculty and staff host a Multicultural Celebration for the elementary, middle and high schoolers every year. Students learned all aspects of where they visited using multi-sensory skills. From designing their own passport to playing an instrument to the beat of island tunes, these students felt like they were relaxing on a beach far, far away. Tune in to take the journey along with them!
The Bob Hayes Invitational Track and Field Meet is a tradition in the Jacksonville community. Year after year, students from all over the United States gather to compete for titles and scholarships. This year, the 45th annual event was hosted by Raines High School. The middle school clinic and meet has only been in existence for a few years, and may not be well known to the general public, but the talented students competing hope to make that change. The middle school students gain valuable lessons and skills from coaches who have been in the business for years. After rotating through training stations on the field, the teams prepare for competition! Watch to see the middle school students excel in this difficult sport.
Walking for exercise may not sound like fun for elementary school students, but that is not the case at Pine Forest Elementary School. The students have taken enough steps over the past few months to have walked to San Diego by now! The program is called Walk Across America, and is in its first year at the school. Administrators say that it will not be the last due to the excitement of the children, and the healthy competitiveness to keep moving. University of North Florida students also got involved with the elementary school by providing their assistance. Watch and walk with Pine Forest!
“REAL School” is produced monthly by WJCT-TV and the Communications Department of Duval County Public Schools. Students David Emmanuel and Hannah Maria Roder host “REAL School,” which airs the first Sunday of every month at 10 a.m. Broadcasted first-run on WJCT-TV, Channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8, “REAL School” is also televised each Monday at 9 p.m. on Comcast cable channel 29 after its premiere.
