DCPS' Middle and High Students Selected for All-State Band & Orchestra
Duval County Public Schools' students from Mandarin Middle School, as along with LaVilla School of the Arts and Douglas Anderson
School of the Arts, have been selected for the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) All-State Bands & Orchestras. Also attending
the conference will be students from Fletcher and Mayport middle schools and Baldwin Middle/Senior High who were nominated by their band
directors and selected for the Middle School Honors Band and the Small School Honors Band.
The bands and orchestras will be conducted by nationally recognized conductors during the FMEA Annual Conference, Music and the
Creative Mind - Wired For Success, from January 6 to 9, 2010.
"This year's conference schedule for music educators is built around tangible data provided by the Florida Department of Education
which validates the remarkably positive effect that sustained instruction in music has on achievement within every category of our
student population," said Paula Thornton, the district's Specialist of Instrumental Music. "We now have positive proof that music
instruction leads directly to higher academic achievement among students who remain engaged in music programs."
