On the Next Episode of "School Matters"
Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and guests discuss new details of the budget shortfall, the summer cancellation of the FCAT, mandatory training coinciding with the Anti-Bullying law and the Urban Elementary Apprenticeship Program. The Duval County Public Schools monthly public affairs television show premieres Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8.
In the first segment of the show, Superintendent Pratt-Dannals speaks with School Board Chairman Tommy Hazouri and Chief Budget Officer Mike Perrone about the budget shortfall that our district is facing. Joyce Morgan Danford asks the district officials about the financial plan for the remaining school year, the upcoming 2009-2010 school year, and if there have been any updates since the topic was last discussed. Parents and other stakeholders are also informed about what they can do to make sure their voice is heard.
The summer administration of the FCAT has been cancelled by the Department of Education due to budget constraints. The District Supervisor of Guidance, Nan Worsowicz, and Andrew Jackson's Guidance Chairperson Vera Bussey, both discuss what this means for high school students and provide resources for students and parents to utilize.
All Duval County Public Schools stakeholders will soon learn of the new Anti-Bullying Law that was signed into effect in mid-2008. Everyone will be required to complete mandatory training offered by the Offices of Safe and Healthy Schools. Supervisor Kathy Bowles and district ZIP counselor Angela
Turk will discuss the details of the law, what the training involves, and the overall benefit for the students.
Superintendent Pratt-Dannals and host Joyce Morgan Danford examines four recruitment initiatives in place to assist individuals interested in teaching without an education degree. Coordinator Lissa Dunn provides details of all four programs, while specifically focusing on the benefits of the Urban Elementary Apprenticeship program. Apprentice-teacher Sheila Webb describes her experiences at Rufus E. Payne Elementary.
