Duval County Top Teachers Named

Five teachers have been selected as finalists for the 2009 Duval County Teacher of the Year award.

These five were chosen from 157 Teacher of the Year at schools. The field was narrowed to 15 semi-finalists based on their informational packet, which included information about their professional development, classroom practices and knowledge of current educational topics.

The District Selection Committee interviewed the semi-finalists and announced the following five finalists:

• Marjorie Nolan, English teacher at First Coast High
• AuGena White-Sapp, fourth-grade English and Language Arts teacher at Rutledge Pearson Elementary
• Alice Smith, second-grade teacher at Henry Kite Elementary
• John Garman, seventh-grade Math teacher at Matthew Gilbert Middle
• Matthew Campese, Math teacher at Sandalwood High.

"The Teacher of the Year program honors teachers in our schools who have gone above and beyond the call of duty for the students of Duval County," said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. "These individuals are a great representation of the more than 8,000 highly devoted and inspirational teachers in our district."

The 2009 Duval County Teacher of the Year will be announced at the EDDY Awards on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The EDDY Awards are hosted by the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, formerly the Alliance for World Class Education. Duval County's Teacher of the Year will then go on to compete for the state-wide title.

"The Jacksonville Public Education Fund is honored to coordinate the EDDY Awards program and gala that recognizes outstanding teachers and celebrates their accomplishments," said Gary Chartrand, Chairman of the Jacksonville Public Education Fund. "The process is designed to identify the best teachers to represent the outstanding teaching professionals in Duval County. We congratulate these finalists on their selection and applaud their commitment to our children and their future."
