DCPS' Students to be Honored at Annual Gamme Beta Boule
Next Friday, May 8, the Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity's chapter, Gamma Beta Boule, the country's oldest African American fraternity, will host its 25th Annual High Potential Youth Recognition Awards Program. This year, more than 400 high achieving African-American students from Duval County Public Schools qualified for the program. To qualify, students must score at the 90th percentile or higher on a national standardized test; score at achievement level 4 or higher on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT); and have a GPA equal to or greater than 3.0.
During the ceremony, members of the fraternity and guests will recognize these high-achieving students. This year's special guests include former Sheriff Nat Glover, now of The Jacksonville Commitment; Dr. Bernard Machen, The University of Florida; and representatives from local colleges and universities. Parents and students will be given an opportunity to discuss scholarship opportunities with representatives of these institutions.
The top eight students will be featured in a video vignette during the ceremony, and are in competition for the coveted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Achievement Award and scholarship. Each of the top eight students will receive cash awards, and all students who attend receive certificates indicating outstanding academic achievement, as well as a medallion. There will also be door prize drawings for students throughout the evening, including giveaways of computers, calculators and gift certificates for books and other supplies.
The event will be held at The University of North Florida's Fine Arts Center, in the Lazzara Performance Hall at 7 p.m.
