On This Week's Episode of "School Matters"
On the next “School Matters,” Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and guests discuss the Be There campaign, Principal for a Day, the importance of professional development, and amazing kids doing amazing things. The Duval County Public Schools monthly public affairs television show premieres Sunday, November 22, 2009 at 10 a.m. on WJCT-TV channel 7 and Comcast cable channel 8.
In the first segment of the show, Superintendent Pratt-Dannals and members of the Duval County Council of Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) detail the specifics of Be There, a national multimedia campaign designed to inspire parents to become more involved in their children’s lives. Gretchen Lynch and Kim Sheldon discuss what Duval County PTAs are doing specifically to promote the campaign, and the Superintendent outlines the overall importance of parental involvement in the district.
The Principal for a Day program entered its second year of welcoming community members to walk a day in the shoes of a Duval County Public Schools’ principal. The office of Community and Family Engagement matched community members with more than 70 participating schools. Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief Greg Burton shadowed Assistant Principal Corey Wright at Englewood High School, and tells of his experiences in this segment. Superintendent Pratt-Dannals also highlighted the successes and challenges of the program, and how he hopes to see it grow in the future.
Professional development is an important part in the growth of teachers in Duval County Public Schools, and the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership provides opportunities for teachers and administrators to continue to develop their skills. Marjorie Nolan, the district’s 2009 Teacher of the Year, and the President and CEO of the Schultz Center, Barbara Langley, talk with the Superintendent about available classes. Marjorie details how the Schultz Center has helped her in the classroom, and provides recommendations for others who have not had the opportunity to benefit from the professional development classes.
Our final segment recognizes “Amazing Kids Doing Amazing Things.” Superintendent Pratt-Dannals talks with Robert E. Lee High School Sophomore Amalia Galdano about her transition from Cuba to the United States. In just one short year Amalia has learned the English language, earned straight A’s in her Advanced Placement classes, excelled in art classes, and has been honored by a local magazine as Hispanic Student of the Month. Tune in to find out more details about this amazing Duval County student.
