Duval County public schools and department receive Learn and Serve Grants

R.V. Daniels and Ortega elementary schools, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, River City Science Academy, and the district World Languages Department were recently awarded Florida Learn and Serve competitive grants by the Florida Department of Education. The grants are awarded to schools and school districts to engage youth in service-learning.

R.V. Daniels Elementary School is taking on childhood obesity. The "Healthy Me!" Garden is a life skills laboratory that enhances classroom experiences and provides students with opportunities to teach other children and their families. Project goals include establishing a greenhouse to grow herbs and vegetables, cooking healthy in the classroom, sharing garden treats and knowledge with the school and community, and preparing a "Kid-tested, Teacher-approved" recipe and activity book. Service hours: 2,925 Award: $4,888.

The "Learn and Serve Vegetable" Garden at Ortega Elementary involves students in the investigation, exploration and creation of a school vegetable garden that provides food for local food banks. Produce packets, with an accompanying student written brochure on How to Grow a Vegetable Garden, will be sold to parents, teachers and the public. Proceeds will go to benefit the local food bank. Service hours: 500 Award: $6,013.

The Douglas Anderson Service-Learning class is a year-long course devoted to service-learning. Students research teen issues, such as drug and alcohol abuse, bullying and violence prevention. The students then use theatre methodology to create issue-based scenes to perform for at-risk elementary and middle school students in the community. Service hours: 3,630 Award: $8,737.

The River City Science Academy focuses on understanding social issues (poverty, hunger, disabled living, local food farming and homelessness) through service-oriented projects. Partners include the City Rescue Mission (CRM), Sulzbacher Center, L'Arche Harbor House and Down to Earth Jacksonville. Service hours: 3,750 Award: $7,474.

The Little Language Learners Service-Learning Project is a collaborative effort among high school world language teachers, their students, and elementary teachers to promote language learning in the elementary grades. Teachers and students will create language lessons appropriate for early learners and incorporate instructional materials that may be needed. Weekly language classes will be taught by the high school students in their assigned elementary school. Service hours: 10,000 Award: $5,733.

For more information about service-learning projects, call Dorie Davis, Director of External Funding, at 904.390.2132.
