Douglas Anderson to Host 11th Annual Writer’s Festival
On Thursday, March 18, through Saturday, March 20,
Douglas Anderson School of the Arts will host its 11th Annual Writer’s Festival.
This year’s festival keynote speaker is three-time Nobel nominee, Joyce Carol Oates. Other writers confirmed include Pulitzer Prize
winning poet Natasha Tretheway; four-time National Poetry Slam winner, Patricia Smith; and many more.
Registration for the event, which includes lunch, is $30 for students and $50 for educators. Scholarships for registration are
available for one student per school, and teachers who register at least five students will receive a complimentary registration. To
register online or for more information, visit
www.douglasandersonwritersfest.com.
In connection with the festival, there will be a Green-Up Symposium for 10th and 11th grade students at the Main branch of the
Jacksonville Public Library, 303 N. Laura St., on Friday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
We are looking for up to eight students from each high school who are interested in Creative Writing and/or conservation initiatives.
It is imperative to the outcome of the workshop that each of our 19 high schools are represented. One interested faculty or staff
member from each school is also invited to attend.
The interactive workshop will provide students with information on the part we all play in preserving our environment for future
generations. Students will also be provided with additional opportunities for service hours through after school events or through the
creation of a conservation club.
The student symposium is free and lunch will be provided. Students need to bring a book, pen and enthusiasm for learning about how
to become an environmental activist.
