Pinedale Elementary Pre-K Students Welcome Superintendent for "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!"

"Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!" was January 25-29, and to kick things off, Superintendent Pratt-Dannals visited Pinedale Elementary to read If You Take a Mouse to School to two ESE Pre-Kindergarten disabilities classes.

The two classes are composed of three- and four-year-old Varying Exceptionality students ranging from disabilities of Developmentally Delayed to those on the Autism Spectrum Disorder. If You Take A Mouse To School is part of the student's new Pre-Kindergarten curriculum.

After the Superintendent had finished reading, the students in Mr. Altman and Ms. Coxey's classes presented him with a book that he could take back to his office to read.

The goals of "Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!" are to promote literacy and the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.

More pictures from the Superintendent's visit to Pinedale Elementary are available on the DCPS' flickr photostream.

Family Science Night at Julia Landon Middle

Julia Landon Middle School recently hosted a family science night for sixth-grade students, their parents and neighborhood fifth-graders.

"Family Science Night was an opportunity for our families to come together and spend quality time participating in student academics," said John Manias, seventh-grade science teacher and event organizer.

The theme was "science in the kitchen." Each family was given their "menu" (lab sheet) to track their findings, and participated in experiments with ingredients that can be found in a kitchen pantry or refrigerator.

"I really liked seeing my dad spill his experiment all over the front of his shirt," commented one sixth-grade student. No word as of yet how dad felt about the encounter!

Julia Landon's second annual Family Science Night was an evening filled with fun, and a good time was had by all. Teachers at Julia Landon are already making plans for next year's event. Word on the street is that parents everywhere are hoping that next year the school will furnish lab coats or aprons for them to wear!

First Coast and Forrest High JROTC Students Intern at Holiday Open House

Commander Navy Region Southeast (CNRSE) and NAS Jacksonville recently co-hosted a Holiday Open House at the River Cove Officers Club to say thank you to the community civic leaders and elected officials for their continued support of the Navy.

Select JROTC students from First Coast, Fleming Island and Forrest high schools supported the event as NRSE Protocol Interns.

During the event, the interns greeted and escorted the prestigious guests through the Admiral's quarters, introduced guests to the Rear Admiral and Commander and assisted with food and beverage service.
