DCPS Announces Winners of Published Poets Contest
Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) recently announced the winners of its First Annual Deputy Superintendent’s Published Poets Contest.
“I am delighted that so many students participated in our First Annual Published Poets Contest, and I am very proud of these winners,” said DCPS’ Deputy Superintendent Patricia Willis. “Knowing that writing is an important skill that impacts what we do every day, I believe this contest will encourage and motivate students to not only enjoy reading, but to enjoy writing as well.”
The contest, which promotes students to read and write poetry, was created in an effort to celebrate “National Poetry Month” in April. The winning poems will be combined into a book that will be printed and housed in the libraries of all Duval County public schools and Jacksonville Public Library locations.
Winners were awarded $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. Winners were honored during a special awards ceremony on April 27, 2010, at the Jacksonville Public Library, 303 N. Laura St.
Cash prizes were provided by the following sponsors: Achieve 3,000, Barnes and Nobles, Holt McDougal/Littell Publishing, Pearson Digital and Scholastic Educational Group. Food for the awards ceremony was sponsored by Community First Credit Union.
