Department of Education Celebrates
Literacy with Recommended Reading List

TALLAHASSEE – The Department of Education today released the 2010 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! recommended reading list, which includes a wide variety of grade-level books for families to share throughout the state’s weeklong tribute to literacy. Research suggests that children who read regularly perform better in school and are more apt to maintain their academic progress throughout the school year.

“The Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! reading list promotes fun and exciting book selections that can help our students develop a love of reading while away from the classroom,” said Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “Reading is the foundation for every subject a student learns throughout their life. No matter what career you pursue, a solid understanding of literacy will help take you to the next level.”

To access the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! recommended reading list, visit www.justreadflorida.com/literacyweek.asp. In addition to the reading list, the Web site also provides information on literacy recognition events taking place throughout Florida and resources for parents on how to make the most of the time they spend reading with their children.

Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is a weeklong celebration from Jan. 25-29, that highlights the significance of reading and literacy not only in education, but throughout various lifelong pursuits. The Department’s annual literacy celebration is meant to demonstrate the benefits of literacy appreciation in all professions.

The Department of Education makes reading a priority in Florida's public schools and the community groups and volunteer organizations that support them. For more information about the Department of Education’s Just Read, Florida! Office, please visit http://www.justreadflorida.com/.
