Duval County School Board recognizes students, staff and community

At the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board (DCSB), Board members and Superintendent Pratt-Dannals recognized several groups of students, staff and a member of the community for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Duval County Public Schools.

During the presentation portion of the meeting, which begins at 6 p.m. in the Cline Auditorium, 1701 Prudential Drive, the following people were recognized:

Cynetra Tolen, a fifth grade student at Carter G. Woodson Elementary School, was recognized for being named Patroller of the Year by the National AAA Auto Club South

The following students from A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology were recognized for being regional winners in the 2008 Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Competition:

The following top five finalist of the 2008 Duval County District Spelling Bee were recognized:

1st - Ashley Elisabeth Barron - Fifth Grade - San Mateo Elementary
2nd - Catherine Mary Braza - Sixth Grade - LaVilla School of the Arts
3rd - Andrew Lewis Hunt - Eighth Grade - Fletcher Middle
4th - Andrew Mosser - Eighth Grade - James Weldon Johnson Middle
5th - Maria IIyas - Seventh Grade - Florida Virtual Academy

The following Duval County Public Schools' principals were recognized because their schools met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for six consecutive years:

  • Sherry Adams, principal of Bank of America Learning Center ;
  • Shana Adams, principal of Brookview Elementary School;
  • Susan Phillips, principal of Chets Creek Elementary School;
  • Mark Ertel, principal of Darnell-Cookman Middle
  • Jayne Owen-Thompson, principal of Hendricks Avenue Elementary School;
  • Jill Leinhauser, principal of Jacksonville Beach Elementary School;
  • Anthony Copeland, assistant principal of James Weldon Johnson Middle School;
  • Patricia Carson, principal of Mandarin Oaks Elementary School;
  • Bill Dutter, principal of Seabreeze Elementary School;
  • Alan Due, principal of John Stockton Elementary School; and
  • Mike Akers, principal of Wesconnett Elementary School
