Duval County Public Schools' Students Recognized for Achievement in Math and Science

JACKSONVILLE - More than 500 fifth-grade students were recognized last night for their high achievement in the areas of math and science at the annual Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) Fifth Grade Recognition Ceremony, held at the UNF Arena.

These students, who represent the top 5 percent of the district's fifth graders, were selected by their schools based on criteria related to math and science.

"A strong foundation in the areas of math and science is critical in today's society," said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. "We are honored to recognize our students who excel in these areas, and we appreciate the commitment of the teachers who helped prepare these students for success in an increasingly global economy."

After having their names announced by their principal, students were presented with medallions and walked across the stage to be recognized by Superintendent Pratt-Dannals and School Board Members. They also received certificates and school items that were donated by local businesses.

The recognition ceremony, which is sponsored by DCPS, has been an annual event since 1995. Angela Spears, anchor and reporter at First Coast News, served as this year's host.
