JACKSONVILLE - Duval County School Board members, Administrators and City leaders broke ground on a new high school on the Southside.
High School AAA, as it is currently named, will be Duval County's 20th high school, and the first since 1990, when both Mandarin and First Coast opened. Construction will begin this spring, and the school will open in the fall of 2010.
“Once open, High School AAA will provide Duval County with its first new high school in more than 20 years,” said Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. “The state-of-the-art facility will provide more than 2,000 seats for our high school students to learn and excel in.”
School boundaries have not been drawn, but the high school could alleviate some overcrowding at Wolfson, Sandalwood, Englewood and Mandarin High Schools, and service incoming freshmen from Twin Lakes, Southside, DuPont and Kernan Middle Schools.
Several community meetings were held during the past five years to provide the public with the opportunity to provide input into the planning for this school. During the meetings, members of the community discussed design and location of the new high school, as well as re-zoning issues.
The new high school, which will be located close to Baymeadows Road and 9A, will be officially named by a group of community stakeholders and area School Advisory Council and PTA members, and then submitted to the Duval County School Board for final approval.
Duval County Public Schools operates more than 160 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
