Jacksonville, FL - Duval County Public Schools, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission and the Jacksonville Journey Faith Coalition will provide a comprehensive and interactive three-hour training class to ensure prospective mentors have a successful volunteer experience for the 2008/2009 school year.
A mentor provides consistent support, guidance and assistance to a student who is in need of a positive role model. Students involved in the mentoring program may be going through a difficult and/or challenging situation, a period of life in which they need extra support, or they may simply need to have another significant adult present in their life. The goal of student mentoring is to help students involved in the mentoring program to gain the skills and confidence to be responsible for their own futures.
The training will prepare the volunteer for the mentoring experience by giving the volunteer the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to be a great mentor. Topics to be covered during training include diversity, communication skills, youth culture and ideas for activities during mentoring sessions.
Volunteers must undergo a thorough background screening before being placed with a prospective student.
