Reaching out to community topic of TV program

The work of the district's Community and Family Engagement Office will be highlighted on the current edition of Eric Smith's public affairs television program, "People & Politics." The program is telecast each Friday at 9:30 p.m. on Comcast Cable Channel 29 beginning July 18.

Smith, who serves as moderator of the popular program, will interview Dr. Alvin G. White, Chief of Staff and Partnerships, and Karen Hanson, Supervisor of Community and Family Engagement.

The program will explore the district's varied efforts to expand public support to boost student achievement. White and Hanson will offer details about the citywide push to provide mentors to all at-risk students who need a supportive adult to counsel and inspire them to achieve academic success. They will explain the district's goal to partner a business and a faith-based community with each of the district's Turnaround Schools. Recruitment of more volunteers in schools and internal customer service training are also discussed.
