Duval County Public Schools Announces
Changes in the 2008/2009 Report Card

JACKSONVILLE - Duval County Public Schools recently made changes to the 2008/2009 report cards for students.

Each year, a committee is established to review the Student Progression Plan and make recommendations for changes to the Superintendent and School Board. The changes to the plan regarding the report card are:

  • An asterisk on the report card in elementary, middle, and high school grades indicates any student who is working below grade level standards or any student following special standards; and
  • Spelling and handwriting in grades two through five have been removed as separate subjects on the Elementary report card. Instead, spelling and handwriting will be integrated into language arts instruction and will be a part of the students' language arts grade on the report card. Spelling can be addressed through vocabulary word work that is part of a lesson or a text being studied.

"Proper review of our materials each year is imperative to the increased academic achievement that is taking place in our district," said Duval County Public Schools Chief of Academic Services, Kathy Leroy. "These changes ensure that our parents have a better understanding of how their child is learning at school."

The purpose of the Student Progression Plan is to present to district stakeholders a guide to student progression which reflects state statute, school district policies and administrative procedures.

Duval County Public Schools operates more than 160 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
