2008 Disability History and Awareness
Weeks
"If you believe people have no history worth mentioning, it's
easy to believe they have no humanity worth defending"
William Loren Katz
States are taking an
important step in the promotion of further understanding and awareness of
the disability rights movement by designating a week (or more) to
acknowledge the role and contributions of individuals with disabilities in
our society.
On June 13, 2008, Florida
Governor Charlie Crist signed into law Senate Bill 856. This bill,
called “Disability History and Awareness Instruction,” requires districts to
designate the first two weeks of October as Disability History and Awareness
Weeks. The bill encourages schools to provide information about
disability history and promote the awareness of the contributions of
individuals with disabilities.
Duval County Public Schools
Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals signed a proclamation declaring October 1
-14, 2008, Disability History and Awareness Weeks in Duval County. He
is encouraging schools to provide instruction on disability history,
individuals with disabilities and the disability rights movement.
Attached are copies of the
proclamation, as well as a
resource guide developed by the FLDOE.
