Truancy Awareness Month
Everyday, more
than two million students are absent from school in America. Students cannot
learn if they are not in school. Personnel in the Duval County Public
Schools (DCPS) believe children have a right to a quality education.
Consequently, many programs and services are offered to meet the unique
needs of students, and to make their school experiences as rewarding as
possible.
Jacksonville United Against
Truancy (JUAT) was founded in the year 2000 and is focused on reducing the
alarming trends of truancy in our city. JUAT is a collaborative effort
with members from the State Attorney's Office, Duval County Public Schools,
the City of Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the Youth
Crisis Center.
JUAT's main goal is public
awareness and the reduction of truancy. JUAT has also established the
month of October as Truancy Awareness Month and annually sponsors community
events to provide families with information on truancy and the importance of
staying in school.
DCPS’ students are participating
in a poster contest to promote truancy awareness. The title of this contest
is “Count Me In For Learning.” First place winners will receive a $50 Simon
gift cards to a local mall.
