Six Duval County Public Schools Teachers Honored by OfficeMax's 'A Day Made Better' Campaign
JACKSONVILLE - Six Duval County Public Schools' teachers were surprised by OfficeMax on October 1 for its ‘A Day Made Better' campaign, joining more than 1,300 educators at schools across the United States also being honored.
OfficeMax’s 'A Day Made Better,' one of the largest national grassroots school advocacy campaigns in history, is an effort to eliminate “teacher-funded” classrooms. According to national studies conducted by the National Education Association, teachers spend nearly $1,200 out of their own pockets each year for basic classroom supplies – adding up, nationally, to about $4 billion a year.
To provide some economic relief to teachers, hundreds of Jacksonville based OfficeMax associates —working secretly with local principals to ensure the element of surprise—selected teachers who exemplified a passion for learning and innovative classroom techniques to receive donations of more than $1,000 in school supplies.
The DCPS teachers selected were: Racheal Cuppy, Hyde Grove Elementary; John S. Windley, Joseph Finegan Elementary; Rebecca Lee, Windy Hill Elementary; Christin Leggett, R. V. Daniels Elementary; Wynester Sherrer, Susie E. Tolbert Elementary; and Derrick Whigham-Gibson, Pine Estates Elementary.
This is the second year OfficeMax, along with their non-profit partner, Adopt-A-Classroom, has sponsored the ‘A Day Made Better’ campaign.
Duval County Public Schools operates more than 160 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
