Duval County Public Schools Receives nearly $1 Million
for Professional Development for Art Educators

JACKSONVILLE - Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) recently received a $1 million Professional Development for Art Educators grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The Professional Development for Art Educators grant will provide teachers with training and on-site support in developing the best instructional practices for arts integration in order to raise student achievement.

“This grant allows teachers to integrate the arts into the core curriculum,” said Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals. “Arts instruction is a critical part of learning and helps students achieve higher grades and perform better in school.”

The grant enables the district to continue its long-standing partnership with the University of North Florida Fine Arts Center and John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., and will serve three elementary schools: Brentwood, Lake Forest and Martin Luther King, and three middle schools: Paxon, Lake Shore and Ft. Caroline.

The purpose of the program is to:

  • Improve student achievement in academics by integrating the arts throughout the core curriculum;
  • support the implementation of high-quality professional development model programs in music, dance, drama, media arts or visual arts, including folk arts, for educators and other arts instructional staff of kindergarten through grade eight;
  • strengthen the capacity of teachers and schools to deliver standards-based arts education programs and to raise student academic achievement in the arts to ensure that all students meet challenging state academic content standards.

The grant will be funded over a three-year period, with about $325,000 awarded each year.

Duval County Public Schools operates more than 160 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
