Duval County Public Schools Participates in National School Lunch Program
Jacksonville, FL - During the 2009-2010 school year, Duval County Public Schools will participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The NSLP will provide free and reduced-price meals to eligible children attending Duval County public schools.
Applications are currently being distributed to all households with a letter
informing them of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for their
children. These letters are sent to the address on file at the child’s school.
If there are multiple students in the same household, only one application needs
to be submitted. Applications can also be picked up at all Duval County public
schools,
online or by contacting the Free and Reduced Price Meals Department at (904) 732-5145.
To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must complete the application and either return it to their child’s school or fax it to (904) 732-5157 for processing. Only applications that contain complete information can be processed. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Households may apply for school meal benefits at any time during the school year and applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. Children whose parents or guardians become unemployed may be eligible for school meal benefits based on their household income during the period of unemployment. If the circumstances of the household otherwise change, such as an increase in the size of the household, the household is strongly encouraged to submit another application to determine eligibility. A household whose application for school meal benefits is denied will be provided an opportunity to appeal the decision.
The household size and income criteria identified below will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the levels shown are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of households certified for Food Stamps, FDPIR or TANF may submit applications for these children with the abbreviated information as indicated on the application and instructions. Foster children that are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Eligibility for foster children is based on the child’s income. Students who are identified as migrant, homeless or runaway may be eligible for free and reduced-price meals and should contact the Free and Reduced Meal Department at (904) 732-5145 for assistance. Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) participants and children who are enrolled in the Head Start/Even Start Program may also be eligible for free and reduced-price meals.
