Media Advisory: Veterans Day Celebrations

To honor our country's Veterans, various Duval County Public Schools are hosting Veterans’ Day events for all parents, families, Veterans, members of the military and the local community. Please review the following list of activities:

  • Friday, November 6, 2009 at 8 a.m. - Joseph Finegan Elementary (555 Wonderwood Dr., Atlantic Beach, FL 32233) will recognize veterans and the school’s many military families with a flag raising ceremony and presentation by the Color Guard of Naval Station Mayport. A representative of Congressman Ander Crenshaw’s office will be in attendance with the Military Liaison Task Force (Beaches Division) members. The school chorus will perform patriotic favorites, and the Fletcher Senior High Band will perform a mini-concert. In addition, representatives from Naval Station Mayport will give a White Table presentation.

  • Friday, November 6, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. – New Berlin Elementary (3613 New Berlin Road, Jacksonville, FL 32226) will recognize Veterans of War. The student body will recite the Pledge of Allegiance and a student will sing The Star Spangle Banner. The Character Trait for the month of November, patriotism, will be introduced and a brief statement will be given regarding the expectations.

  • Monday, November 9, 2009 at 8:40 a.m. – San Pablo Elementary (801 North 18th Ave., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250) will be presenting its annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony in the school courtyard.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. – Atlantic Beach Elementary (298 Sherry Dr., Atlantic Beach, FL 32233) will be having a flag raising ceremony.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. – Kernan Trail Elementary (2281 Kernan Blvd. S., Jacksonville, FL 32246) will be having a flag raising ceremony presented by the Mayport Color Guard, as well as a White Table ceremony. Lunch for military guests will be provided by the school’s PTA.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 8:45 a.m. – Sabal Palm Elementary (1201 Kernan Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32225) and its student body of nearly 1,300 students will be welcoming Veterans and their families to its flag raising in the school courtyard. The Naval Station Mayport Color Guard will present the colors and the school chorus will perform two patriotic songs.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 9 a.m. – Seabreeze Elementary (1400 Seabreeze Ave., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250) will honor all parents and family members who are active or retired military during a flag raising ceremony.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. - Abess Park Elementary (12731 Abess Blvd. Jacksonville, Fl 32225) will be having a flag raising ceremony. The school band will be playing and the Sandalwood High School Color Guard will be presenting the colors.

  • Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. – Jefferson Davis Middle (7050 Melvin Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32210) will be having a flag raising ceremony presented by its Color Guard. The entire school will be wearing red, white and blue.

  • Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. – Students from the Creative Writing Department at LaVilla School of the Arts (501 Davis St. N., Jacksonville, FL 32202) will be doing a field study at the Veteran's Memorial Wall. Students will be interviewing visitors who might be veterans, and will then write essays about what they saw, heard and learned.
