Ribault High Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps
Female Physical Fitness Team Wins Nationals in San Diego

Jacksonville - The Ribault High School MCJROTC (Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) Female Physical Fitness Team took home first place at the 2010 National High School Physical Fitness Championships this past weekend in San Diego.

The team competed against four other Female Regional MCJROTC Champions and placed first, making them the Female National Champions for the entire MCJROTC program out of a total of 232 schools.

Created by the U.S. Marines Youth Foundation, the National Youth Physical Fitness Program provides a mental, moral and physical challenge, and establishes reachable goals for students. The program is designed to teach kids at an early age about the importance of staying healthy and promotes a "Fitness for Life" message.

During their competitions, students compete in a total of five different timed events, including sit-ups, push-ups, the standing long jump, pull-ups and a 300-yard shuttle run. The entire team competed in each event at the same time with a minute break in between every event.

Ribault’s team represented the entire state of Florida, as well as the second region, which consists of 49 MCJROTC programs. Team members are Genesis Towles, Cora Mcleod, Jessica Patterson, Brittney Neavins, Whittney Neavins and Kimarri Fulton. They are coached by First Sergeant Anthony E. Landrum and Master Sergeant James R. Smith II.

The National High School Physical Fitness Championships are held in San Diego each spring, and can accommodate up to 100 teams (the top 50 male and female teams in the country). All teams that attend nationals have the trip to San Diego funded by the U.S. Marines Youth Foundation, Inc.

Duval County Public Schools, the nation's 21st largest school district, operates 166 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
