Site Dedication for New Duval County Elementary School

Jacksonville, FL – Duval County Public Schools today celebrated a site dedication for a new elementary school scheduled to open in August 2011.

The new elementary school will be located at 450 Kernan Blvd. North, and is tentatively named Waterleaf Elementary, #160. The school is located in School Board District 1, served by Martha Barrett.

Duval County Public Schools and WG Mills, Inc. will construct the $18.6 million, 98,000-square foot facility that was designed by Bhide & Hall, and will accommodate 800 students in the kindergarten through fifth grade.

With the Federal Government’s approval of American Revitalization and Recovery Act (ARRA) funding this year, the School Board was able to utilize federal funding through the ARRA program to construct the school.

Although a boundary change will not be determined until later this year, possible school boundaries affected include Sabal Palm, Abess Park, Kernan Trail and Lone Star elementary schools.

While temporarily referred to as Waterleaf Elementary, this is not the official school name. The naming process will start in January 2011 and a name recommendation will be forwarded to the School Board in the spring for approval.

Duval County Public Schools operates 172 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
