Media Advisory: Duval County Public Schools to Participate in “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!”
Florida First Lady Ann Scott to Visit Kirby-Smith Middle

Jacksonville, FL - The Just Read, Florida! Office in the Department of Education (DOE), in partnership with other DOE offices and numerous other state organizations and agencies, is planning a statewide “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” event, scheduled for the week of January 24-28, 2011.

In conjunction with the state, Duval County Public Schools will be hosting a wide-variety of events throughout the district, including a special visit by Florida First Lady Ann Scott for the launch of the Million Minute Marathon, an initiative for every student to read independently for 20 minutes on January 25.

First Lady Scott will be joining Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals, School Board Members and the students and staff of Kirby-Smith Middle School (2034 Hubbard St., Jacksonville, 32206) on Tuesday, January 25, at 10 a.m. to kick off the Million Minute Marathon and Celebrate Literacy Week.

Additional school events throughout the district can be found on our website.

The goals of “Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!” are to promote literacy throughout the state by raising awareness of the state’s and districts’ programs and projects, and most of all, to promote the enjoyment of reading for children and adults of all ages.
