After nearly two years of planning, preparation and hard work, Fort Caroline Middle School has been officially named an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School and received authorization to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.
“All of the work our students, staff and parents have put into the process of becoming an IB World School has been well worth it, and we appreciate the advice and support of our colleagues as we have taken on this task,” said Principal Jennifer Bridwell. “Fort Caroline will continue to thrive and provide a world class education to all those who enter its doors.”
According to the International Baccalaureate Organization, the IB Middle Years Programme is for students aged 11 to 16, and provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.
The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five areas of interaction that provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects. Students are required to study their native language, as well as a second language, humanities, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical education and technology. In the final year of the programme, students also engage in a personal project, which allows them to demonstrate the understandings and skills they have developed throughout the programme.
Fort Caroline’s Middle Years Programme Coordinator will be teacher Tempus Glass.
Duval County Public Schools operates 172 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
