Duval County School Board Meeting Highlights - November 1, 2011

Below are the highlights of the November 1, 2011 board meeting:

Board Recognizes Schools, Volunteers and Donors during Presentations

During the presentation portion of the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and Board members recognized:

• Five, Five Star Schools: Enterprise Learning Academy, Jacksonville Beach Elementary School, John N.C. Stockton Elementary School, Loretto Elementary School, Seabreeze Elementary School
• State Farm and Fidelity for their donations to Read it Forward Jax!
• Holly McKay for being an outstanding volunteer at Seabreeze Elementary School

Board Votes to Close Bank of America Learning Academy

The board voted to unanimously to close the Bank of America Learning Academy effective following the conclusion of the 2011/2012 school year. Closing the school is expected to save the districted approximately $310,000. The school opened in 1992 as Barnett Bank Satellite Learning Center.

School Board Members Revise Policy to Align with State Statute Governing Salaries

During a public hearing the board voted to revise the policy that outlines their pay. Section 1001.395, Florida Statutes sets forth the method for calculating Board member salaries. Approval of these revisions aligned Board Policy 2.24 with the statutory provisions governing this area.

Jean Ribault High School Football Field to Bear Name of Retired DCPS Educator

In honor of the legacy of Dr. Alvin G. White, a former Duval County Public Schools teacher, coach, principal and administrator; the stadium at Jean Ribault High School will soon bear his name. Dr. White launched his career with the district as a science and physical education teacher and coach. Later he served as a principal, an area superintendent and an assistant superintendent. He also served as chief operating officer where he displayed a unique leadership style that gained him the respect and admiration of many. He retired after serving 35 years with the district.

Reduction in Force for Several Positions Approved

The School Board approved a Reduction in Force for 14 positions within Duval County Public Schools, but maintained four Guidance Counselor positions that were originally included in the agenda item for reduction.

Board Approves Seven Charter School Applications, Denies One

The board approved the following charter school applications:

• Florida High School for Accelerated Learning- Greater Jacksonville
• Ivy Preparatory Academy of Florida
• Ivy Prep Young Men’s Leadership Academy
• KIPP Destiny Elementary
• KIPP Voice Elementary
• Somerset Academy Duval.
• Somerset Academy High Eagle Campus

The board denied Springfield Neighborhood School’s application.

The Board Approves Boundary Changes of Seven Elementary Schools

The boundary changes are expected to relieve overcrowding and will take effect August 2012. Boundary changes were approved for the following schools:

• Beauclerc Elementary School
• Green Field Elementary School
• Hogan Spring-Glen Elementary School
• Southside Estates Elementary School
• Twin Lakes Elementary School
• Twin Lakes Elementary School
• Windy Hill Elementary School

Duval County Public Schools operates 177 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy and culturally diverse world.
