Media Advisory - Duval County Public Schools’ Veterans Day Events

WHAT:
To honor the United States’ military veterans, Duval County public schools will be hosting special events for Veterans Day. Veterans Day is November 11, 2011.

Schools and district offices will be closed on Friday, November 11.

WHEN & WHERE:

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

o West Riverside Elementary, 2801 Herschel St., Jacksonville, FL 32205. Color Guard, 6:30 p.m. Robert E. Lee’s Navy JROTC will perform a drill demo and Color Guard presentation. The ceremony is open to the public.

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

o Sabal Palm Elementary, 1201 Kernan Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32225. Annual Flag Raising, Terry Parker High's NJROTC will present the colors with Sabal Palm's safety patrol students. The chorus will perform "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "America the Beautiful." Jacob H., a fifth-grader, will read the poem "Old Glory" by Andrea Wise. Mrs. Bookhart's second-grade class will read through "The American Hero," a poem by Roger Robicheau.

o Abess Park Elementary, 12731 Abess Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32225. Flag Ceremony, 8:30 a.m. Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC will take part in this flag ceremony. This ceremony is one of three simultaneous events that Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC is participating in.

o Arlington Middle, 8141 Lone Star Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32211.
Flag Dedication, 1:30 p.m. Terry Parker’s JROTC will join students, parents, teachers and staff for the dedication of a new American Flag, compliments of the USS Simpson. As a Holiday flag, this particular flag flew over the USS Simpson on holidays and Sundays.

o J. Allen Axson Montessori, 4763 Sutton Park Ct., Jacksonville, FL 32224. Flag Ceremony, 8:30 a.m. Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC will take part in this flag ceremony. This ceremony is one of three simultaneous events that Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC is participating in.

o Joseph Finegan Elementary, 555 Wonderwood Dr., Atlantic Beach, FL 32233. Veterans Day Ceremony, 8:45 a.m. Students and teachers will gather for an honorary ceremony. The event will include a Prisoner of War and Missing in Action White Table Ceremony.

o Kernan Trail Elementary, 2281 Kernan Blvd. S., Jacksonville, FL 32246. Flag Ceremony, 8:45 a.m. Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC will take part in this flag ceremony as a special event to honor veterans and retired military. This ceremony is one of three simultaneous events that Sandalwood High’s Air Force JROTC is participating in.

o Mandarin High, 4831 Greenland Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32258.
Teacher Veterans Ceremony, 7 a.m. Mandarin’s 13 teacher veterans will be honored with a token of appreciation. Mandarin’s JROTC will partake in the ceremony. The band and chorus will perform a musical selection in the veterans’ honor.

o New Berlin Elementary, 3613 New Berlin Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32226. Flag Retirement Ceremony, 8:45 a.m. The Naval Honor Guard will retire the old flag and explain the meaning for this ceremony. The Honor Guard members are AM2 Jay Wilson, ET2 Rick Jimenez and narrator AEC Kevin Tracy. The flag has been flying since the school opened five years ago. It will be folded and presented to Principal Reese, and displayed in the front office. Fourth- and fifth-graders will sing the Star Spangled Banner and This is America. Mrs. Soles’ second-graders will perform a dramatization of the book of the month, America’s White Table by Margot Theis Raven.

o Robert E. Lee High, 1200 McDuff Ave. S., Jacksonville, FL 32205.
Drill Presentation, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Lee Navy JROTC will travel to Tasti D-Lite to perform a drill presentation. The hosted event celebrates hiring veterans that have returned from war. Tasti D-Lite is located at 1024 Park St., Jacksonville, FL 32204.

o San Jose Elementary, 5805 St. Augustine Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32207. Joint Flag Raising Ceremony, 9 a.m. Wolfson High School’s Army JROTC will join students from San Jose Elementary for an honorary flag raising ceremony. Attendees will proceed to Taylor Residence in a parade for the senior citizens.

o San Pablo Elementary, 801 North 18th Ave., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250. Veterans Day Ceremony, 8:45 a.m. Members of Mayport's HSM-40 Airwolves will participate in this annual ceremony, along with Mayport's Color Guard and a helicopter flyover.

Duval County Public Schools operates 177 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy, and culturally diverse world.
