Media Advisory - Fletcher Middle School and the UNF Women’s Basketball Team Bring Mathematics to the Court
WHAT:
Fletcher Middle School’s sixth-grade students and the University of North Florida women’s basketball team have paired up to bring mathematics to the court. Fletcher Middle’s sixth-graders have expanded their math studies to analyze the sport of basketball. Each student “adopted” a UNF player, explaining their skills in math terms such as field goals achieved compared with field goals attempted.
The women from UNF’s basketball team will travel to Fletcher Middle for the students’ presentations as they discuss the game-to-game statistics and analysis of the players’ shooting trends. This unique lesson helps Fletcher’s students learn math as it is used in a real-world sense.
The UNF coaching staff will discuss the significance of math as they determine which skills need to be practiced by the team and how they can overcome the opposing team’s strategy. Students will be reminded of the greater importance of their performance in the classroom.
