Media Advisory - Duval County Public Schools' December
Read It Forward Jax! Activities
WHAT: To help promote the importance of reading to our students, several Duval County public schools will be hosting special events that excite and engage students in reading activities. Reading is the foundation of learning and Duval County Public Schools is committed to continuing to improve students’ reading comprehension skills.

- Thursday, December 8, 2011
- Twin Lakes Academy Elementary, 8000 Point Meadows Dr., Jacksonville, FL 32256.
Polar Express Night, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy storytelling, holiday treats and the holiday classic “The Polar Express” movie. Guests are asked to participate in the theme by wearing their comfy P.J.s and favorite slippers, bathrobes, etc. Storytelling will be from 6 to 6:30 p.m. The movie will be shown at 6:30 with holiday cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate provided. The event is free, but tickets are required.

Mid Year Reading Celebration. All day event. Students will be honored for achieving and surpassing their reading goals. Awards will be given to students who have read 500,000 words or more; awards include e-Readers and personal libraries.
- Oak Hill Elementary, 6910 Daughtry Blvd. S., Jacksonville, FL 32210.
Reading Goals Celebration. A representative from the Pirate Museum will be visiting to reward students who have met their reading goals.

Polar Express Day. Students will come to school dressed in their pajamas and participate in literacy activities centered around the book “The Polar Express.”
- New Berlin Elementary, 3613 New Berlin Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32226.
Polar Express Night, 6 to 7:15 p.m. Grab your surf board… it’s going to be Florida style this year. Instead of hot chocolate, they are serving yoo-hoo’s and tree cookies. Students will hear their favorite teacher read “The Polar Express” followed by activities in the cafeteria. Students will make a bell necklace, create a sand dollar ornament, follow directions to make a Florida snowman cookie, and write a thank you note to a veteran.
- Sadie Tillis Elementary, 6084 Morse Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32244.
Winter Reading Wonderland. “The Polar Express” movie will be shown on closed-circuit TV for the students to enjoy. Following the movie, students will participate in a variety of fun reading activities that support the movie.

Owl Treasure Reading Celebration. Parents and students
are invited to parent involvement night to enjoy food and fun
reading activities that parents will be able to implement at
home.

Super Six Strategies. Students will participate in activities that highlight the first three strategies: making connections, predict and prove, and questioning in relation to the book “The Polar Express.”
- John Love Elementary, 1531 Winthrop St., Jacksonville, FL 32206. Polar Express Day. Students will be rewarded for their hard work in reading
with a special viewing of "The Polar Express." Students in grades Pre-K through second-grade have the option to enjoy the movie in their favorite pajamas.
