Duval County School Board Meeting Highlights - January 9, 2012

Below are the highlights of the January 9, 2012 board meeting:

Board Recognizes Winning Football Teams, High School Grades, Graduation Rate Increase and Community Partners during Special Presentations

During the presentation portion of the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and Board members recognized the following football teams for their outstanding seasons:

  • Matthew Gilbert Middle School
  • Duncan Fletcher High School
  • First Coast High School

The Board thanked and recognized all Duval County Public Schools’ administrators, teachers, support staff and parents for the increase in high school grades and graduation rates. The following high schools increased their grades:

  • Frank H. Peterson Academies of Technology (Up 3 Grades)
  • A. Philip Randolph Academies of Technology (Up 2 Grades)
  • Robert E. Lee High School (Up 2 Grades)
  • Terry Parker High School (Up 2 Grades)
  • First Coast High School (Up 1 Grade)
  • Jean Ribault High School (Up 1 Grade)
  • Nathan B. Forrest High School (Up 1 Grade)
  • Samuel W. Wolfson High School (Up 1 Grade)

Overall, 18 of 21 high schools scored A, B or C grades (84%). The Duval county graduation rate rose 4.6 percentage points to 71.2 percent. Meanwhile, the dropout rate was 2.3%.

The board also recognized Jacksonville Port Authority and HandsOn Jacksonville for their partnerships and support of several Duval County schools.

School Board Approves New Positions for Communications and Community Engagement Departments

The Board approved three new positions to help ramp up marketing and outreach efforts for DCPS. A supervisor of public relations/marketing, supervisor of development and a video specialist will join the existing team and bolster efforts to take the district’s mission into the community.

Board Takes Disciplinary Action against Math Teacher, Assistant Principal and Paraprofessional

The Board voted to approve all of the suspensions without pay on the School Board agenda.

Duval County Public Schools operates 177 schools and serves approximately 125,000 students. The school district is committed to providing high quality educational opportunities that will inspire all students to acquire and use the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a global economy and culturally diverse world.
