Media Advisory - Darnell-Cookman Students Participate in Hands-on Medical Training

WHAT:
Eight lucky students from Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School will have the opportunity to test and train with a virtual laparoscopic trainer alongside physicians from the University of Florida and Shands.

This training session will be held at the Shands Jacksonville Center for Simulation Education & Safety Research (CSESaR), as part of a simulation training initiative currently in place for practicing surgeons.

CSESaR will be home to the virtual trainer for only two days. Because of their strong partnership with Darnell-Cookman, the school was invited to take part in the training. This opportunity gives these eight students a chance to make real-world connections with their studies.

The virtual trainer is provided through Simbionix, a company providing advanced simulation-based training using state-of-the-art learning tools.

Students and staff will be able to experience trainings in the following modules: laparoscopic basic skills, essential tasks, basic and advanced suturing, procedural tasks, essential gynecology and advanced gynecology - hysterectomy.

WHEN:
Wednesday, February 8, 2012, 2 - 4 p.m.

WHERE:
UF Center for Simulation Education and Safety Research - Shands Jacksonville, 655 West 8th St., Jacksonville, FL 32209
